How to send Diwali gifts to family in the USA from India (without customs headaches)

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. If you are in India with family in the US, or in the US with family across the country, the simplest route is to order from a store that ships from India directly to their door with tracking. Our cut-off for guaranteed Diwali delivery in the US is 20 October.

Why posting a parcel yourself is hard

  • India Post and couriers need a customs declaration, HS codes and an invoice, even for gifts.
  • Anything over $800 declared value can attract US duty; brass and textiles are usually under it, but the paperwork is still yours.
  • Mithai, dry fruits and anything with ghee are often held or destroyed at US customs.
  • Transit without tracking is 3 to 6 weeks.

What travels well and lands well

  • Brass diyas and a small puja thali. No breakage, no customs trouble, used on the night itself.
  • A block-printed table runner or cushion covers. Flat, light, and the house looks festive for weeks.
  • A brass masala dabba. The gift for the cousin who just moved into their first apartment.
  • A Jaipuri razai. Diwali in the US is cold; a 1 kg quilt arrives in a small box.

Timeline that works

  1. By 20 October: order. We hand-wrap, add a gift note, and keep prices off the parcel.
  2. Within 2 days: dispatched from India by tracked express.
  3. 10 to 14 days: delivered to a US address. You get the tracking link by email and can forward it.

Gift notes that land

Keep it short and specific. "For your first Diwali in Dallas, light these at sunset and call us" does more than a paragraph. Add it in the cart under "This is a gift".
