Details

Ajrakh printing is a resist-dyeing technique from Kutch, Gujarat, and parts of Rajasthan, a process involving multiple rounds of mud resist, natural dye, and washing that can take days to complete. This cushion cover in green and indigo is Ajrakh-printed and then finished with hand-embroidered mirror work: the resist-dye ground, the mirrors placed individually by hand. Two very different craft traditions, one object.

Ajrakh is one of India's oldest surviving textile traditions, a resist-print technique practised in Kutch, Gujarat, and parts of Sindh, involving natural dyes and mud resist applied in careful sequence before washing reveals the pattern underneath. This cushion cover works from that tradition in green and indigo, the classic Ajrakh palette, and then adds hand-embroidered mirror work across the face, small pieces of glass set into the cloth by needle and thread, catching light and reflecting the room back at itself.

The mirrors are not decorative in the way that a bead or sequin is. They are embedded in the fabric, part of its structure, and they shift with the cover rather than sitting on top of it. The cotton is pure, the embroidery dense enough to be visible from across a room. This is a cushion that asks to be touched.

Materials + Care

Pure brass, sheesham, cotton — colours from a dye pot, not a swatch. Brass deepens with use; that is not a defect, it is the object becoming yours. Care notes for each material live in the Details above.
