Details
Brick red and indigo sit at the heart of the Ajrakh palette, colours that come from natural dye sources (madder for the red, indigo plant for the blue) applied through a resist-printing process practiced in Kutch, Gujarat. This cushion cover is Ajrakh-printed in brick red and finished with hand-embroidered mirrors: each small piece of glass sewn individually into the cloth, catching the room's light from a different angle.
Brick red against indigo, the two colours of Ajrakh at their most direct. Ajrakh is a resist-print tradition from Kutch, Gujarat, a technique involving natural dyes and mud resist applied in precise sequence, washed and dried repeatedly until the pattern holds. This cushion cover is made in pure cotton using that artisanal process, then finished with hand-embroidery: mirrors sewn individually into the fabric, not glued, not attached with adhesive, but needle-worked in.
The brick red is warm and grounded. The mirrors catch whatever light is in the room, afternoon sun, a lamp at evening, and return it in small bright points. This is a handmade cushion that changes with the day. The handcrafted embroidery is visible from a distance; up close, the mirror settings themselves are worth examining.
