Applique Cutwork Runner Coral and Mustard

Applique cutwork is the craft of deliberate subtraction: fabric is cut away in geometric forms, and the negative space becomes the pattern. The pieces are then layered, the seams invisibly joined with running stitches so fine they nearly disappear. This is a tradition practiced across Rajasthan and Gujarat, where geometric precision has always been the language of decoration. The coral and mustard here read as harvest colors, the India of October afternoons.

These two colors together, coral and mustard with a thread of gold, are a specific kind of Indian autumn. The runner is made using applique cutwork: pure cotton panels cut into geometric forms, layered against each other, then sewn shut with invisible running stitches that hold each seam so cleanly the eye reads the shape, not the join. It is painstaking work. The result is a surface that reads differently in different light.

On a bare wooden table it announces itself. Against white linen it acts as counterpoint. At a festive dinner or an ordinary Tuesday, it carries the same weight, the knowledge that it was made slowly, by someone who knew what they were doing.
