Details
The Lohar ironsmith community of Bastar, Chhattisgarh reads the human figure as a problem of equilibrium, and the balancing man is one of their most arresting solutions. Made from hand-hammered iron rods bent and welded without molds or casting, the figure holds its precarious pose through nothing more than the maker's calibration of weight. It shouldn't stand. It does.
Bastar's Lohshilp craft has been evolving for as long as the Lohar community has inhabited central India's tribal belt. What began as functional metalwork, tools for agriculture and hunting, grew into a visual vocabulary of figures, animals, and forms drawn from the landscape and daily life of Chhattisgarh. This balancing man sits squarely in that tradition, each rod cut, heated, and bent by hand before being assembled into the final composition.
The form is simultaneously playful and precise. It belongs on a desk, a side table, or a shelf where it will be seen at eye level. The iron surface is intentionally unfinished, raw and dark, with the faint evidence of hammer marks that tell you how it was made.
