Bastar Floor Stand Lohshilp Wrought Iron Candle Stand

Forty inches of wrought iron, forged by hand in the Lohshilp tradition of Bastar, Chhattisgarh. The Iron Smith community of the Bastar tribal belt has worked iron since before the craft had a formal name, first to equip the tribes of the forest, then to make the kind of objects that outlast their makers. No casting, no mold. The iron is heated and shaped by hammer and hand until it holds its form.

This floor-standing candle stand comes from Bastar, Chhattisgarh, where the Lohshilp wrought iron tradition has been practiced by the Iron Smith community for generations. It is forged without a mold, heated, hammered, and bent by hand into a form tall enough to anchor a corner of a room. The black iron finish is the iron itself, oxidized and uncoated.

At forty inches, it occupies space the way sculpture does. Place it beside a low chair, against a white wall, or in the corner of a room that needs weight. Light a candle at the top and the iron casts a long shadow. The object reads the same way empty as it does lit, certain and unhurried.

• Do not immerse in water or use liquid cleaners.
• Remove wax residue with a soft cloth while still warm.
• Polish metal surfaces occasionally with a soft brass cloth.
