Beige & White Textured Hand-Printed Bedsheet

Beige and white are the colors of unstarched muslin, of the fabric before it becomes anything else, the zero state. Block printers in Sanganer, outside Jaipur, Rajasthan, have always understood that the simplest palette requires the most precise block work, because there is no complexity to carry a mistake. This bedsheet is Sanganer working in its most restrained register: texture pressed into cotton, the pattern more touch than sight.

Handcrafted by hand-block printing on pure cotton in Sanganer, this bedsheet puts beige and white into a textured repeat so understated that it reads as cloth rather than print. The carved wooden block leaves a slight relief in the cotton, you feel it before you see it. That quality is lost in machine printing; it survives only in handmade work done by hand.

This sheet is the one that disappears into a room and makes everything else look better. The set includes two pillow covers printed in the same artisanal sequence. The cotton will hold its hand-printed marks through years of regular washing.

• Machine wash cold, gentle cycle.
