Brick Red Lippan Mirror Kutch Mud and Glass

The houses of Kutch, Gujarat are built from the same earth that colors them. Lippan Kaam, the mud-and-mirror work that adorns their walls, uses locally sourced clay, pigmented with what the land provides. Brick red is not a choice for this palette: it is a given. Women of the Rabari and Mutwa communities have been pressing it into handcrafted geometric patterns for generations.

Made in Kutch, Gujarat using the Lippan Kaam technique, this handmade mirror frame is built from clay worked into geometric patterns by hand, with mirrors set into the surface before it sets. The brick red is warm and deep, closer to terracotta than to orange, with the slight variation in tone that comes from clay that is not perfectly homogeneous.

Hang it where the color can be read: a white wall, a light-wood paneled space, a hallway with a window at the end. The hut motif in the artisanal clay relief is a reference to the bhungas that inspired this entire art form. The mirrors embedded in the frame will do the rest.
