Details
Mul cotton, also called mulmul's heavier cousin, is a fabric with body and breathability in equal measure. Artisans in Sanganer, outside Jaipur, Rajasthan, print this with carved wooden blocks before layering begins: the Brick Red and Navy Blue Chintz pattern pressed into the fabric by hand, one repeat at a time. The quilt is then stuffed and stitched through, the hand-quilting visible as a grid across the surface.
Chintz in Brick Red and Navy Blue is not a quiet combination, it is the color of old kalamkari, of resist-dyed textiles, of pigments that have been used in Indian cloth-making since before the Mughal courts. This quilt is hand block-printed in Sanganer, outside Jaipur, Rajasthan, the 18th-century floral pattern pressed into fine mul cotton using carved wooden blocks. Then it is layered, stuffed with cotton batting, and hand-stitched through.
The result is reversible, two faces, two moods. It functions as a quilted bed cover through the year and as an AC blanket through the summer. The mul cotton surface is a little more substantial than mulmul, with a drape that holds its shape when folded back over a pillow.
