Dahlia Pink and White Jaipuri Razai

The Jaipuri razai is a category unto itself, a lightweight, reversible, hand-stitched quilt that Rajasthan's artisans have refined over centuries. This one is printed in Sanganer, outside Jaipur, Rajasthan, the floral motifs pressed into fine cotton mulmul with carved wooden blocks before the quilt is layered and stitched by hand. The Pink and White palette is from the dahlia, a flower that arrived in India through colonial-era botanical exchange and was absorbed entirely into the Indian visual vocabulary.

Pink in Indian textile printing has a particular quality, it is rarely a single tone, but a color that shifts between rose and blush depending on how the block took the dye and how the cotton received it. This artisanal Jaipuri razai is hand block-printed in Sanganer, outside Jaipur, Rajasthan, the dahlia floral motifs appearing on both faces of the reversible quilt, each face carrying a different pattern from the same tradition.
