Details

In the villages of Kutch, Gujarat, the Lippan tradition lives on the walls of homes, natural clay pressed into geometric relief, hand-cut mirrors embedded into the wet surface before it sets, the whole decorated with mineral pigment. This tea light holder scales that wall art down into a functional object without losing what makes the craft legible: the mud texture, the mirror catch, the geometry that looks both ancient and precise.

Lippan is a wall art tradition from Kutch, Gujarat, a mud-and-mirror craft developed by desert communities where mirrors functioned as practical tools for multiplying scarce light. Artisans press natural clay into geometric forms, embed hand-cut mirrors while the mud is workable, and finish with mineral pigment. The green of this tea light holder pulls from the natural palette of the Kutch landscape, dry ground and distant scrub.

Light a candle inside and the mirrors scatter the flame across the room in small fragments. The mud surface holds the warmth of the light differently than ceramic or metal, softer, more diffuse. It is the kind of object you keep in view even when it is unlit.

Materials + Care

Pure brass, sheesham, cotton — colours from a dye pot, not a swatch. Brass deepens with use; that is not a defect, it is the object becoming yours. Care notes for each material live in the Details above.
