Details
The original Harappan elephant seal was pressed into clay more than 4,000 years ago in one of the cities of the Indus Valley Civilization, an empire that predates Rome, Greece, and much of recorded human history. This terracotta replica is cast from natural clay using a hand-molded process, scaled up from the original square centimeter seal to a size that can be hung on a wall. The texture of the fired clay carries the impression of every original detail.
The elephant seals of the Harappan civilization are among the oldest surviving images of the animal in human art, pressed into soft clay tablets that were used for trade and record-keeping in cities along the Indus River around 2500 BCE. This terracotta replica is made from natural clay, cast by hand, and scaled up so the detail that was lost at stamp-size becomes legible at wall-art scale. It comes framed, with a provision for both hanging and standing.
On the wall it reads as artifact and art at once, a thing with an actual history, not a decorative reference to history. The terracotta surface has the warmth and grain of fired clay. The elephant is carved with the same formal dignity it carried four thousand years ago when someone pressed it into a seal.
