Indigo and Green Block-Printed Mirror-Embroidered Cushion

Indigo has been India's most exported color, harvested, fermented, traded through ports from Surat to Amsterdam. On this handmade cushion cover, it is paired with hand-embroidered mirrors that catch light and scatter it. The block print lays the ground; the needlework lifts it.

This cover combines two crafts: hand block-printing in indigo and green, a palette that Indian printers have worked with for centuries, and handcrafted mirror embroidery, where small pieces of reflective glass are stitched into the surface with a needle and thread. The block print provides the ground; the mirrors catch whatever light comes from wherever it comes from. In certain rooms, at certain hours, the cover glimmers unexpectedly. This is not a special effect. It is what mirrors do.

Pure cotton underneath means the cover breathes and washes well. The indigo will settle and deepen slightly after the first two washes. The mirrors will stay exactly where the artisan placed them.
