Ivory and Navy Chintz Chevron Cotton Cushion Cover

Chintz, the English name for what Indian printers had been making for centuries before Europeans named it, was built on the chevron as much as on the floral. In Sanganer, outside Jaipur in Rajasthan, artisans press this ivory-and-navy chevron from carved wooden blocks, the 18th-century register rendered on 21st-century cotton.

This cushion cover comes from the Chintz Collection, a line that draws from the 18th-century tradition of Indian hand block-printed cotton that was so desired in Europe that France and England banned it. The ivory-and-navy chevron here is printed by artisans in the Sanganer tradition: carved blocks, hand-mixed pigments, the geometric repeat set by eye and experience. Navy is the color the Chintz makers always understood would travel, it works against ivory the way stone works against plaster, giving both their proper quality.

This sits on a sofa or a bed with equal conviction. The chevron is not a trend. It is a pattern that has been printed on Indian cloth for three hundred years.
