Ivory and Rust Hand Block-Printed Cotton Floor Rug

Sanganer, on the outskirts of Jaipur in Rajasthan, has been printing on fabric for generations. The artisans here press hand-carved wooden blocks onto cotton in a sequence that produces patterns with a slight irregularity, no two runs exactly alike. This rug is hand-block printed by artisans in Sanganer, outside Jaipur, Rajasthan, a craft centre where wooden block-printing has been practised across generations. The ivory base absorbs the rust pattern with the kind of softness that synthetic printing cannot replicate; the edges of each motif are slightly soft, the product of pressure applied by hand rather than machine. The cotton and jute construction gives the rug a density that anchors it without making it stiff.
