Kalamkari Floral Handwoven Block-Printed Cotton Rug

Woven on a loom and then printed by hand using the Kalamkari block-printing tradition, where artisans known as Kalamkaris apply vegetable dyes to cotton using carved wooden blocks, a method with roots in Andhra Pradesh that has since spread across India's weaving centers. The floral pattern here is built from earth tones: ochre, rust, olive, and natural cotton ground.

Kalamkari refers both to the craft and the craftsman, the Kalamkari artisan applies dye to cotton using carved wooden blocks, building up pattern through repeated impressions. On this rug, the weave and the print are separate acts: the cotton dhurrie is first woven flat on a loom, then the artisanal Kalamkari motifs are hand block-printed across its surface using vegetable-derived dyes. The floral pattern sits in a palette of soothing earth tones, the colors of dried marigold, aged terracotta, and pale wheat.

As a floor rug it is soft underfoot and flat enough that furniture legs don't catch. The vegetable dyes in this handcrafted Kalamkari printing develop with age, exposure to sunlight and foot traffic gives the colors a depth they don't have when the rug first arrives.
