Details

Made in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, Pital Nagari, the Brass City, from 100% pure brass, etched by hand with border motifs drawn from the woven silks of Kanjeevaram, Tamil Nadu. The etching is done with a fine stylus, line by line, repeating the geometric rhythm that a silk weaver would otherwise pass through a loom. Two crafts, two states, one handmade object.

The masala dabba is one of the most intimate objects in an Indian kitchen, the box your mother opened without looking, muscle memory guiding her hand to turmeric before she'd even decided what she was cooking. This one is pure brass, given an antique finish that deepens the handcrafted etching inspired by Kanjeevaram saree borders. Seven detachable containers and a spoon sit inside, each one sized for a different spice.

On a marble counter, it reads as sculpture. In daily use, it becomes the quiet center of the kitchen. Brass does not harbor bacteria. It will dull and deepen with handling, the high-use edges losing their polish first, which is exactly right for something touched this often.

  • Hand wash only with mild soap and lukewarm water. Never put in dishwasher.
  • Wipe dry immediately after washing. Do not leave wet.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners and steel wool, use a soft cloth only.
  • Polish periodically with a brass-cleaning powder or lemon and salt to restore lustre.

Materials + Care
