Details
Made from pure brass and etched with motifs drawn from the border patterns of Kanjeevaram silk sarees, a South Indian weaving tradition that has produced some of India's most recognizable textiles. On the saree, these motifs are woven in gold thread on silk. Here, they are etched into cast brass, a material that carries its own history of Indian craft.
Kanjeevaram sarees are woven in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, and their border motifs, geometric, interlocking, precise, are part of the shared visual vocabulary of South Indian cultural life. This brass jar takes that vocabulary and moves it into three dimensions: the same border patterns etched into handcrafted cast brass, polished to a smooth finish, closed with a fitted lid. It is a translation, not an imitation.
The jar is sized for everyday kitchen use, tea leaves, sugar, cardamom pods, dried herbs. The lid fits firmly. Brass keeps dry goods fresh without the chemical interactions of plastic. Over time, the etched surface develops a warmer tone in the recessed areas of the pattern, where handling doesn't reach and the brass oxidizes slowly at its own pace.
