Details
In Sandur village, North Karnataka, the Lambani women embroider as a form of cultural record-keeping. Descended from Banjara nomads who traveled the desert routes from Rajasthan, they kept their tradition of mirror-setting and thread embroidery through centuries of movement and settlement. This red and black runner is handmade on cotton, the mirrors hand-set in uniform sizes to catch light at every angle.
The Lambani craft tradition has received international recognition not because it was preserved in a museum but because it continued to be practiced by the women who inherited it. In Sandur, Karnataka, you can still encounter Lambani women wearing the full traditional dress, heavy red skirts embroidered at every seam, mirrored panels that catch the Deccan sun. This runner is a table translation of that same visual intelligence: red, black, and mirrors working together in a geometry that is immediately recognizable as something specific.
The mirrors are hand-set, each one positioned and stitched into place by the same hands that have been doing this artisanal work their entire lives. On a table, they catch light the way the originals catch it in the field: intermittently, catching you off guard. This is a handcrafted runner that changes with the hour.
