Lippan Dazzle Multicolour Mud and Mirror Wall Art

From Kutch, Gujarat, where the communities of the white desert have decorated their home walls with Lippan mud art for generations, natural clay pressed into geometric relief work, hand-cut mirror fragments set into the wet surface, mineral pigment applied for color. This handcrafted piece brings that wall tradition directly: large, vivid, structured through geometry that is both ancient and compositionally alive.

Lippan work emerged in the homes of Kutch, Gujarat as a practical solution to a practical problem, how to make light fill a room when you have very little of it. Natural clay was pressed into geometric relief on interior walls, and hand-cut mirrors were set into the wet surface to multiply whatever lamplight existed. Over generations, the technique became its own artisanal art form, one of the most visually distinctive crafts in the Indian subcontinent.

This handmade wall piece is made directly in that tradition, in collaboration with artisans from Kutch who have practiced Lippan for their entire lives. In daylight the geometry and color are the story. In lamplight the mirrors take over, fragments of scattered light, moving as the light source moves, making the wall feel inhabited.
