Details
Where the Shilabati and Kangsabati rivers move through Midnapore, West Bengal, the madur grass that grows along their edges has been harvested and woven into domestic textiles for generations. The Madurkathi weavers set up their handlooms, which in some households are as old as the craft itself, and work the dried grass against cotton thread, stripe by stripe, the aqua and beige of this runner building up one interlace at a time.
Madurkathi is both a grass and the name given to the tradition of weaving it, a craft associated with Midnapore district in West Bengal, where it is produced by artisan communities who grow, harvest, and weave the material themselves. This handmade aqua green and beige runner comes from that uninterrupted lineage: natural madur grass and cotton thread, woven on a handloom, the aqua introduced through the cotton weft.
The color combination is quiet and coastal, the aqua neither tropical nor washed-out, the beige of the natural grass holding it to earth. It reads well against stone, wood, and linen tablecloths, and its surface is heat-resistant by the nature of the grass itself. Something happens to a table when you lay handcrafted natural material across it: it slows down.
