Details
The madur sedge grass grows along the river margins of Midnapore district in rural West Bengal. Harvested at the right season, dried, and interlaced with cotton thread on ground looms by madurkathi weavers, it produces a flat, dense, heat-resistant surface. The maroon in these mats is the deep red of Indian hospitality, the color of the dupatta laid over a guest's shoulders, the color of sindoor, of auspiciousness.
In Midnapore, West Bengal, madurkathi weaving is not a revival, it never left. The weavers here have been working with local madur grass for generations, their looms simple, their knowledge accumulated rather than learned from books. This maroon set carries that continuity to the dining table. The color is saturated without shouting; the handcrafted grass surface is tactile in a way that synthetic materials cannot replicate.
Each handmade mat sits flat, holds heat, and asks nothing. Under a brass bowl, under a ceramic plate, under a steel tumbler, the maroon deepens when wet and lightens when dry. This is a material that lives by the same rhythms as the table it serves.
