Details

From the eastern regions of India, the river-threaded districts of West Bengal, comes the natural grass used to weave these maroon table mats. The madurkathi tradition of Midnapore is one of those craft forms that has never needed revival because it never stopped: the grass grows, the weavers weave, the mats go out into homes. Maroon is the color of the border threads here, dyed into the cotton that is interlaced with the natural grass.

The madurkathi weavers of West Bengal work at the intersection of the practical and the beautiful, and they have been doing so long enough to make it look effortless. Natural grass from the eastern regions of India is dried, then woven on ground looms with cotton thread, the result is a surface that is flat, heat-resistant, and genuinely textured in a way that woven synthetic matting can only approximate.

The maroon here reads as a deep, confident color, the red of Bengal's festivals, the red of the sindoor in the part, the red that Indian homes have always known to use without apology. Beneath a brass pot, beneath a ceramic bowl, beneath a steel thali, these mats hold their color and their ground, meal after meal.
