Maroon and Black Hand Block-Printed Floor Rug

Sanganer, outside Jaipur in Rajasthan, is a printing town. The artisans here press carved wooden blocks into earthy pigments and bring them down hard on stretched cloth, a motion that has not changed in three centuries. The maroon and black on this handcrafted rug come from that same deliberate strike.

This rug was hand block-printed by artisans in Sanganer, Rajasthan, using the same carved-block technique the town has practiced since the courts of Rajputana. The maroon-and-black palette is austere in the best sense, the two colors hold each other without competing, and the artisanal block-print motifs carry the slight variation of a human hand rather than the perfect repetition of a machine. The jute-cotton construction gives the rug body without making it heavy; it lies flat, folds easily, and does not slip.

Place it at the foot of a bed, at a doorway, in a reading corner. It does not need to be the focal point. It is content to be the thing the room is built around.
