Details
Each depression in the surface of this jar was made by a hammer, held by a hand, struck at an angle calculated by eye. The artisans of Moradabad, Pital Nagari, the Brass City of Uttar Pradesh, have been working brass this way for generations. The medium size is the most useful: wide enough for a small scoop, tall enough to hold a week's worth of tea.
Hand-hammered and handcrafted in pure brass by the metalworkers of Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, this medium-sized jar holds its contents in a vessel that is as considered as it is functional. The hammered surface is the result of sustained hand work, each indent individual, the overall texture a kind of controlled variation that no machine can replicate.
At home in a kitchen or on a bar shelf, this handmade jar stores sugar, loose-leaf tea, or dry ingredients with the natural protective quality brass offers against moisture and insects. The lid seals well. The brass deepens with contact and warmth over time, growing richer in tone the more it is used.
