Details

The hammered finish on this brass jar is not a texture applied afterward, it is the record of the making. Artisans in Moradabad's metalworking quarter strike the brass surface by hand with a rounded hammer, each blow leaving an indent that catches light differently from the next. No two surfaces are identical. The small jar sits in the palm of one hand.

Cast and hand-hammered by the artisans of Moradabad, India's Pital Nagari, the Brass City of Uttar Pradesh, this small jar carries a surface texture that is entirely the product of human hands. The hammered finish creates a surface that refracts light in a dozen directions at once, warmer than polished, more interesting than plain.

With its fitted lid, the jar holds tea leaves, sugar, a small measure of seeds, or whatever the kitchen calls for. Small enough to tuck beside the stove. Heavy enough that you notice when you pick it up. Brass kept in use deepens over time, this piece will look better in six months than it does today.

Care Instructions

  • Brass will develop a natural patina with use, this is not a defect, it is the object becoming yours.
  • Hand wash only with mild soap and lukewarm water. Never put in dishwasher.
  • Wipe dry immediately after washing. Do not leave wet.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners and steel wool, use a soft cloth only.
  • Polish periodically with a brass-cleaning powder or lemon and salt to restore lustre.

Materials + Care

Pure brass, sheesham, cotton — colours from a dye pot, not a swatch. Brass deepens with use; that is not a defect, it is the object becoming yours. Care notes for each material live in the Details above.
