Mould-Cast Pure Brass Serving Bowl

Cast in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, India's Pital Nagari, the Brass City, from pure brass. The bowl was formed in a mould, hand-scraped to remove casting lines, and polished. It is the simplest possible form: a circle, a depth, a rim. The weight when you pick it up settles the question of whether it is real brass or not.

Moradabad's brass workshops produce everything from decorative objects to functional serveware, and the distinction between those two categories is often false. This small bowl, cast from pure brass in the Pital Nagari tradition, is both at once. Its diameter makes it right for dry snacks, nuts, or condiments; its weight and surface make it an object worth keeping on a table even when it isn't in use.

• Brass will develop a natural patina with use, this is not a defect, it is the object becoming yours.
• Hand wash only with mild soap and lukewarm water. Never put in dishwasher.
• Wipe dry immediately after washing. Do not leave wet.
• Avoid abrasive cleaners and steel wool, use a soft cloth only.
• Polish periodically with a brass-cleaning powder or lemon and salt to restore lustre.
