Naga Mustard Backstrap-Loom Woven Tribal Cushion Cover

Mustard cotton with fine black motifs interwoven through the structure of the cloth, not printed on top, but built into the weave itself. Produced on a backstrap loom by tribal women weavers in the Himalayan foothills of Nagaland, this handmade cushion cover carries symbols that belong to one specific tribe's visual identity.

The backstrap loom requires the weaver's entire body, one end anchored to a wall or post, the other strapped around her waist, the tension of the textile maintained through her posture and movement. It is intimate, handcrafted work. The black motifs on this mustard cotton cover are tribal symbols specific to the Naga community that produced it, encoded in the weave rather than drawn on the surface. They cannot be separated from the cloth without destroying it.

Mustard is a colour with presence. On a natural linen sofa it is warm and grounding. Against white walls it is the strongest note in the room. Against dark upholstery it holds its own. The fine black interwoven motifs keep this from being simply a solid, there is always something more to see, at close range, in good light.

• Machine wash cold, gentle cycle.
• Remove cushion insert before washing.
• Wash separately for first two washes.
• Do not bleach. Line dry or tumble dry low.
• Iron on medium while slightly damp.
