Ocean Blue Lippan Wall Hanging Kutch Mirror Work

The bhungas of Kutch, Gujarat, round mud homes built to survive earthquake and desert wind, are decorated on the outside with Lippan Kaam. Women press clay into the walls in swirling geometric patterns, set mirrors to catch the light. This hanging carries that architecture inside.

Lippan Kaam is practiced almost entirely by women, the Rabari, Kumbhar, Marwada, and Mutwa communities of Kutch, Gujarat, who learned it from their mothers and grandmothers as part of how a home is made auspicious. Clay is mixed to the right consistency, patterns are built up by hand in relief, and mirrors are pressed in before the surface sets. The ocean blue palette here is soothing in the way that water is.

This handcrafted piece is larger than most Lippan work and rewards space. A wall that gets afternoon light. A bedroom where you want something to look at from bed. The mirrors move through the day.
