Details
Woven in Banaras, Uttar Pradesh, by artisans who learned the Karhuwa technique from their fathers and their fathers before them. The method requires every floating thread on the reverse to be clipped by hand, thousands of cuts per panel, producing the lace-like cutwork through which light passes. Peach yellow, like the inside of a ripe guava.
In the Banaras weaving tradition, the Karhuwa technique is considered among the most demanding: threads float loose across the reverse face of the loom and are then cut individually, leaving behind an open lacework that reads as texture from the front and filters light through from behind. This peach yellow panel carries that labor invisibly, what you see is gossamer, what you hold is structure.
Drawn closed in a doorway, the curtain turns hard midday light into something softer and more golden. It pairs naturally with hand-block printed bedsheets or solid woven panels. Wash it, hang it, and watch it dry in twenty minutes, cotton this fine does not hold water long.
