Pear Green Karhuwa Cutwork Door Curtain

This curtain was woven in Banaras, Varanasi, by weavers trained in the Karhuwa technique, one of the most labor-intensive weave forms practiced on the Ganga. Floating threads are individually clipped from the reverse of the fabric, leaving behind a delicate cutwork that lets afternoon light pass through in scattered fragments. The pear green is the color of a mango grove just before monsoon.

The Karhuwa technique, practiced for generations in Banaras, Uttar Pradesh, requires a weaver to work with threads that float loose across the back of the cloth, and then clip each one by hand, creating the open handmade lacework that gives this curtain its character. No two panels are identical. The light that filters through the cutwork in the afternoon shifts as the sun moves, making the curtain itself a kind of timepiece.

In a living room or French doorway, this pear green panel is neither opaque nor absent, it offers the particular privacy of gauze, where you feel enclosed without being shut in. The cotton breathes. The room stays cool. The color holds.

Care Instructions

• Machine wash cold or hand wash in cold water.
• Wash separately for first two washes to prevent colour transfer.
• Do not bleach. Line dry in shade, avoid direct sunlight while drying.
• Iron on medium while slightly damp for best results.
• Avoid tumble drying on high heat.
