Sanganer Mulmul Hand-Printed Cotton Dohar

Three layers of fine mulmul cotton are stitched together, the middle layer block-printed by artisans in Sanganer, a town on the outskirts of Jaipur, Rajasthan, where the Chippa community has printed textiles since the 17th century. The motifs are drawn from nature, leaves, water, the geometry of things that grow. Pressed by carved wooden block onto cotton, then dried in open air.

Sanganer's printing tradition belongs to the Chippa community, handcrafted block printers who have worked this craft since settling near Jaipur centuries ago. The Sanganeri print is recognizable for its fine lines and delicate naturalistic motifs, distinct from the bolder resist-printed tradition of nearby Bagru. This dohar carries those artisanal prints across three layers of fine mulmul cotton, quilted together into something that is light enough to fold small but warm enough for an air-conditioned room.

It is the textile equivalent of a long exhale. Pull it over you and the weight registers as present but not heavy, the mulmul breathes, the print catches what little light there is, and the room feels considered in a way that synthetic bedding never achieves.
