Details
Chintz arrived in India before the British did, the word itself derives from the Hindi 'chint,' referring to the spotted, brilliantly-patterned cotton that Indian weavers and dyers had been making for export since the 14th century. The 18th-century floral vocabulary on this curtain, trailing vines, ornate foliage, stripe-and-bloom, is that tradition reinterpreted by block-print artisans outside Jaipur, Rajasthan, pressing carved wooden blocks into cotton, one impression at a time.
Ivory, maroon, and navy: a combination that has appeared in Indian textile design long enough to feel inevitable. The pattern is drawn from the Chintz vocabulary, 18th-century florals with their particular density of detail, trailing vines that never stop moving across the cloth, stripes that give the eye a place to rest between blooms. Each motif is hand-block printed by artisans in Rajasthan using carved wooden blocks.
Hang this in a room and it does what Chintz has always done: it makes the space feel inhabited, intentional, with a history. The ivory ground keeps it from feeling heavy; the maroon and navy keep it from feeling sparse.
