Details
Ajrakh is not a print, it is a process. Named for the Arabic 'aaj rakh' (leave it today), each layer of color requires the cloth to rest and cure before the next is pressed. Originating in Sindh, this 4,500-year-old technique now lives among artisans in Kutch, Gujarat, and pockets of Rajasthan. This runner combines hand block-printing using carved wooden blocks with hand embroidery in red thread, two crafts sharing a single surface.
In Kutch, Gujarat, the Khatri community has kept Ajrakh printing alive through flood, partition, and earthquake. The process demands patience that industrial production cannot replicate: resist printing, mordant application, natural dyeing, washing in the river, drying in open sun, each step done in sequence, each color earned. The indigo in this runner is that indigo: deep, slightly uneven, the mark of a dye that came from the earth.
The red thread embroidery runs along the border in counterpoint, a separate hand, a separate skill, the two craft traditions meeting on this single length of cotton. It lies flat on a dining table and changes the entire character of the room. This is not a runner that blends in.
