Details
Cast and etched in brass, the surface motifs on this jar are drawn from the border designs of Kanjeevaram silk sarees, the interlocking geometric patterns that weavers in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu have been refining for generations. On silk, these motifs are woven in gold thread. On brass, they are etched into metal, then finished in antique brown. Two South Indian traditions, one handcrafted object.
The Kanjeevaram saree's border is among the most labor-intensive elements in Indian textile production, each motif is woven separately and later joined to the body of the saree. The etched motifs on this handmade brass jar carry that visual vocabulary into metalwork: the same geometric grammar, rendered in a different material by a different hand. The antique finish is applied to the cast brass surface and deepens over time with handling.
The jar closes with a fitted lid and holds tea leaves, sugar, saffron, or whatever you reach for most in your kitchen. Brass has natural antimicrobial properties. Leave it on your counter and it will become part of how the room reads, not a decorative object set apart, but an artisanal working object with a history.
