Details
Bastar, Chhattisgarh sits on some of India's richest iron ore deposits, and the communities here have shaped this metal for longer than written records confirm. Lohshilp, the wrought iron craft, began with farming and hunting tools forged by the Lohar ironsmith community, then slowly crossed into art. Each piece is hand-hammered from raw iron rods, no molds, no machines, only the anvil, the fire, and the maker's eye.
This handcrafted decorative stand is a product of Bastar's Lohshilp tradition, one of the oldest artisanal metal craft forms in central India. The ironsmith community of Bastar has worked with locally sourced raw iron for generations, forging each handmade form by hand over open fires, hammering the metal into shape while still hot. The results carry the marks of that process: slight irregularities in line, surfaces that catch shadow at unexpected angles.
As a floor or corner piece it reads as sculpture. It holds its own against a pale wall, the dark iron silhouette becoming more defined as light changes. Iron like this develops a quiet patina over time, a surface memory of the hands and air around it.
