Details
The stripe is one of the oldest printed motifs, not ornamental but structural, the simplest way a block can organize a surface. In Sanganer, outside Jaipur in Rajasthan, printers laid this charcoal stripe on off-white cotton using carved wooden blocks, letting the rhythm of repetition do the work.
Hand block-printed in Sanganer, Rajasthan, this cushion cover uses the stripe as a form of restraint. The charcoal-and-off-white combination works because neither color performs: the charcoal provides definition, the off-white provides air, and the block-printed edge of each stripe carries the slight softness of a hand rather than the hard edge of a machine print. Pure cotton is the right base for this, it takes the pigment clearly and washes clean.
This cover suits a sofa that already has color and needs punctuation. It also suits one that has none and needs a starting point. The stripe is obliging that way.
