Details

Dabu printing is a mud-resist technique from Rajasthan dating to the 7th century CE, artisans apply a paste of clay and wheat chaff to cloth before dyeing, blocking out sections that remain undyed while the rest takes indigo. The lattice pattern on this rug is the negative space left by that ancient resist, not ink on cloth but dye withheld.

Dabu, the mud-resist printing tradition of Rajasthan, is one of India's oldest artisanal surface design techniques. Artisans apply a mixture of clay, gum, and wheat chaff to cotton before immersing it in an indigo vat. Where the mud paste sits, the dye cannot penetrate. When the resist is washed away, the pattern appears not as something added to the cloth but as something preserved within it, a negative image, the colour of undyed cotton, held inside a ground of deep indigo.

The geometric lattice on this handmade rug is precise, repeating, rigorous, the kind of pattern that rewards a room that can hold it. Against pale wood or stone, the indigo reads rich and deep. The cotton surface has the slight hand of natural fibre rather than the flatness of synthetic pile. This rug comes with a history that its handcrafted surface carries honestly.
