Ganderbal Kashmir Willow Wicker Serving Tray

Woven by the wicker basket makers of the Ganderbal region, Kashmir, one of the valley's oldest weaving communities, this handcrafted serving tray uses hand-harvested willow set around a charcoal-finished wood frame. The tray is compact. The weave is tight. The contrast between pale willow and dark wood is the whole point.

This serving tray comes directly from Ganderbal, Kashmir, made by artisans whose families have been weaving willow for generations. The form is flat and practical, a tray is a tray, but the material brings a specific atmosphere to it. Willow in its natural pale state, woven tightly against charcoal-darkened wood: the combination reads as considered without trying to be.

Carry tea to the balcony on it. Set a chai kettle and two cups on it at the kitchen counter. Leave a candle and a small book on it beside the couch. The tray adapts to whatever rhythm the morning or evening requires. The wicker ages with use rather than against it, getting quieter, a little more worn at the edges, a little more itself.

Care Instructions

• Brass will develop a natural patina with use, this is not a defect, it is the object becoming yours.
• Hand wash only with mild soap and lukewarm water. Never put in dishwasher.
• Wipe dry immediately after washing. Do not leave wet.
• Avoid abrasive cleaners and steel wool, use a soft cloth only.
• Polish periodically with a brass-cleaning powder or lemon and salt to restore lustre.
