Ivory and Charcoal Hand Block-Printed Cotton Rug

In Sanganer, outside Jaipur in Rajasthan, artisans press carved wooden blocks into charcoal-dark pigment and bring them down on stretched cotton. The ivory ground absorbs the motif clearly. The effect is graphic without trying to be: two colors, one block, a thousand impressions.

This handmade rug was hand block-printed by artisans in Sanganer, Rajasthan, the same town whose printing tradition has supplied textiles to traders, courts, and households across centuries. The charcoal-and-ivory palette is as old as block-printing itself: high contrast, no ambiguity, the kind of combination that reads from across a room and rewards examination up close. The jute-cotton blend gives the rug structure underfoot and keeps it lying flat without adhesive or backing.

Charcoal and ivory do not date. They do not belong to a season or a decade. Lay this handcrafted rug down and build the room around it, or lay it down after everything else is already in place. Either way, it fits.
