Details
Chintz began in India, the word derives from the Hindi chheent, the dye-printed cotton that European traders carried home by the shipload in the 17th century and promptly fell in love with. Block printers in Sanganer, outside Jaipur, Rajasthan, work in a lineage that predates the colonial trade entirely, pressing carved wooden blocks into mul cotton with the same precision that made Indian textiles the envy of the world. This quilt echoes that older moment: ivory, taupe, powder blue, the palette of aged paper and light.
Inspired by 18th-century chintz, the Indian original, not the European copy, this quilt is hand-block printed in Sanganer on mul cotton, a fabric so fine it carries print the way watercolor paper carries ink. The ivory-taupe-powder blue palette reads as both archival and contemporary, the kind of color combination that photographs well and reads better in person.
Reversible, with two coordinated hand-block printed faces, this quilt functions across seasons, as an AC blanket, a light bed cover, or an extra layer when the night turns. The cotton fill is pure; the weight is almost nothing. It will outlast the memory of the day you bought it.
