Jaali Green and Dusty Pink Hand-Printed Cushion Cover

Two colours that should not work together, and do, the deep green of a monsoon courtyard against the muted rose of old plaster. This jaali-pattern cushion cover is hand-printed in Sanganer, outside Jaipur, Rajasthan, using carved wooden blocks pressed onto pure cotton. Each repetition of the lattice carries a ghost of the one before it.

The jaali is a lattice born in stone, carved into jharokhas and palace screens to let air and light pass through while maintaining the form of the wall. Sanganer artisans have long translated that geometry from stone into fabric, pressing the pattern onto cotton with handmade wooden blocks inked by hand. The green here is the colour of old gardens; the dusty pink the colour of walls that have lived through many summers. Together, they make something quieter than either does alone.

Use this as the anchor in a mix of printed covers, or let it sit alone on a reading chair. The cotton is unlined and light, suited to rooms that stay warm, and the colours deepen slightly with each wash, not fading, settling.

• Wash separately for first two washes.
• Do not bleach. Line dry or tumble dry low.
• Iron on medium while slightly damp.
