Details

The dabara set, a tumbler and wide-rimmed saucer for cooling South Indian filter coffee, is one of those objects whose form has not needed to change. This one is cast in pure brass and etched with motifs drawn from the Kanjeevaram weave: the temple border, the geometric repeat, the deep-loom weight translated into metal. Antique-finished. Heavier than it looks.

Cast in pure brass and hand-etched in Moradabad, India's Pital Nagari, the Brass City of Uttar Pradesh, this dabara set takes its design from the Kanjeevaram silk tradition. The etching is minimal: a border pattern, a repeat motif, the kind of restrained ornamentation that does not compete with the ritual it serves. South Indian filter coffee is brewed strong, cooled by pouring between vessels until the temperature is right. This set is made for that exact purpose.

The antique finish deepens the brass into a warm ochre. Use it daily and it will deepen further, the metal recording the oils of your hands, the steam of the kaapi, the mornings you poured. Brass does not stay the same. That is the design.

  • Avoid abrasive cleaners and steel wool, use a soft cloth only.
  • Polish periodically with a brass-cleaning powder or lemon and salt to restore lustre.
