Details
Made in steel and finished with enamel work, the surface motifs of this dabara set are drawn from the Kanjeevaram saree tradition, the interlocking border patterns of a silk weave translated into enamel on metal. The design crosses two South Indian craft vocabularies: the weaver's geometry made permanent in fired enamel.
The Kanjeevaram saree is among the most recognizable objects in South Indian material culture, its wide border patterns, often woven in gold thread on silk, have been refined over generations. This coffee dabara set takes those border motifs and renders them in enamel on steel: a translation that is neither imitation nor pastiche, but a genuine conversation between two artisanal craft traditions. The steel body is grounded and functional; the enamel design is the memory it carries.
The dabara set is used for South Indian filter coffee: the decoction is poured from the upper cup into the lower bowl and aerated by lifting and pouring back, creating the foam. The set works for this ritual or sits on a shelf as the object it obviously is, something that took thought to make, and hands to make it.
