Details
The masala dabba is the center of the Indian kitchen, the round tin (or here, the brass box) with its smaller containers inside, each holding a spice that goes in a specific dish at a specific moment. This version is made in pure brass and etched with Kanjeevaram-inspired motifs, the kind of ornamental geometry you find in the border of a great silk weave. The containers inside are detachable.
Cast and etched in pure brass by the artisans of Moradabad, India's Pital Nagari, the Brass City, this masala box carries a design sensibility borrowed from the Kanjeevaram silk tradition: temple borders, geometric repeat, the language of a weaver translated into metal. The individual spice containers inside lift out completely, making them easy to fill, easy to clean, and easy to line up at the stove.
Brass has a natural antimicrobial quality that makes it well-suited to spice storage. The containers keep contents dry and protected from light. The box itself sits on a kitchen counter the way a meaningful object sits, present, familiar, in use every day.
