Kashmir Willow Cloche Serving Platter with Lid

Made by the wicker basket makers of Ganderbal, Kashmir, this serving cloche is woven from willow in the round, a form that requires the weaver to shift rhythm constantly as the diameter changes from base to dome. The lid and base are woven separately and fitted to each other. The willow is pale and reedy; the wood frame beneath is dark and anchoring.

A cloche is one of the oldest serving forms, a dome over food, keeping warmth in and air out. This one comes from Ganderbal, Kashmir, made from willow wicker over a dark wood base, the dome woven round by the same artisans who have been making wicker baskets in the valley for generations. Remove the lid and the base functions as a serving tray, wide and flat and unobtrusive.

Bring it to a balcony table. Set it on a cheese board at a gathering where you want the reveal, lifting the lid, to do some work. The materials are fully natural and breathe without trapping moisture, which makes this better than airtight alternatives for bread or anything that should not steam. The wicker will show its age gracefully, which is what natural materials do when they are used.
