The form follows the function without ceremony: it is wide enough for a baguette, tall enough for a croissant, and constructed tightly enough that it holds its shape when picked up with one hand. The wicker breathes, which is exactly what bread requires.

From Ganderbal, Kashmir, this bread box is woven from willow wicker around a charcoal-darkened wood frame. The natural wicker breathes rather than sealing, which is what makes it better for bread than an airtight container. Croissants, baguettes, buns, or the morning's leftover rotis: the box holds them without trapping the humidity that turns bread soft in the wrong way.

It sits on the kitchen counter and announces nothing beyond what it is. The willow is pale and the wood is dark and the contrast between them is the kind that does not require an explanation.
