Lambani Mirror Work Hand-Embroidered Cotton Cushion Cover

The Lambani women of Sandur, Karnataka trace their origins to the deserts of Rajasthan and Kutch, carrying their embroidery traditions through centuries of migration. This cushion cover is hand-embroidered with mirrors and coloured threads in Lambani style, each stitch placed by hand, each mirror embedded individually, the finished surface dense and declarative.

The Lambani community, who settled in Sandur in Karnataka's Bellary district during the 18th and 19th centuries, brought with them a textile tradition from Rajasthan and Kutch, brilliant colour, mirror-work embroidery, thread-work that covers fabric completely with pattern. What Lambani women make, they make by hand: mirror after mirror stitched into place, threads woven through in geometric sequences that carry tribal identity in every motif.

This cushion cover is one such object. It is heavy in the hand. The mirrors catch light differently at every angle. Against a plain linen sofa or a neutral cotton bed, it is a single, sufficient statement. This is not accent, this is the point of the room.
