Lippan Hut Mirror White Clay and Glass

Drive through the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat and you will see it on the exterior walls of bhungas, the round mud homes of the Rabari and Mutwa communities. Mud pressed into patterns, small mirrors set into the wet clay, catching light from the desert sun. Lippan Kaam. Women's work, considered auspicious, passed between generations without formal instruction.

This wall mirror is made in Kutch, Gujarat, using Lippan Kaam, the mud-and-mirror art form traditionally practiced by women of the Rabari and Mutwa communities on the exterior walls of their homes. Clay is pressed into geometric patterns by hand; mirrors are embedded before it dries. The hut motif echoes the bhungas that inspired the design.

Hang it where it will catch some light, a hallway, a bedroom wall, a bathroom. The mirrors fracture and scatter whatever falls on them. The white clay ground makes the room feel cleaner. It is heavier than it looks.
