In the white desert of Kutch, Gujarat, women of the Rabari, Kumbhar, and Mutwa communities have long adorned the walls of their mud homes with Lippan Kaam, clay pressed into geometric forms, fragments of mirror pressed in while still wet. The red here reads like sindoor and soil. The black grounds it.

Made by artisans in Kutch, Gujarat, this handcrafted wall panel uses the Lippan Kaam technique, clay worked by hand into relief patterns, mirrors embedded before the surface sets. The deep red and black colorway is richer in person than in photographs; the mirrors read differently depending on where the light comes from.

It works best on a neutral wall where the contrast can do its work. A narrow hallway. A reading corner. The space beside a door. Square format, clean geometry, this is handmade Lippan at its most considered.
